Financial Therapist Explains Money and Mental Health

It makes sense to share living expenses like rent/mortgage energy bills transportation taxes and food in a joint account in proportion to how much each brings in per month. This if A brings in x and B bring in 2x then B should pay two thirds of the joint bills as they bring in two thirds of the money. Each partner also has their own bank account so if she wants to spend 500 on a dress or he wants to spend 500 on a set of tyres for his car they can.

Unfortunately my adhd doesn’t care one bit about what those abstract numbers are for and just does whatever it wants for dopamine. I haven’t found a method that truly fixes all my problems yet.

I agree 100% with your holistic & positive approach using Money Archetypes to focus on money issues strengths. You are correct about the Klontz Money Script Inventories (KMSI) approach as all responses interpret & assume everyone is "suffering" from a money type, which is not always truth. The Klontz Money Behavior Inventory (KMBI) puts you into depressing categories, with attempts to apply clinical diagnosis clients by declaring their behavior is "similar to a person that suffers from.... "Compulsive" & "Pathological" disorders... all negative labels which make people feel like failures. I very much appreciate the way your able to focuses on the positive behavior aspects, using a client strength to create life balance over the weaker traits. From my experience your approach feels more motivating, uplifting & inspires confidence.

this is actually useful, thank you. i always forget to pay my bills, so i have my mom reminding me in person, i have some of them set to autopay and some need my attention every month. i also struggle with saving money and impulsive shopping - but i've finally made it to having a good financial reserve by sending my money to a saving account where i pay fees everytime i want to withdraw money - i know it's not favorable so i don't touch it unless i really need the money. also i've learned that paying with cash helps me ''see'' the money flow away and have better control of my spendings than paying by card.

Hi Lindsay, could you suggest a few books for anxious attachment people that they might find useful to read. Definitely I feel that any author might not have written financial advice in accordance to attachment theory. But there are different techniques suggested, can you please suggest a technique/book that would be more beneficial for an anxious attachment to apply/read. Another idea, you can create a video for all the attachment styles and help them suggesting books/techniques that might be more tailored to their issues. Thanks!!

During my studies its very interesting to learn how Financial Therapist without a license, nor having any type of degree requirement if they are able to show therapy "experience" have the ability to become certified and practice in any state as laws do not apply to them. They are claiming and teaching they provide therapy and treat financial "debilitating anxiety & depression" I wish there were more laws and regulation to prevent this type of public deception which puts the public's safety at risk. t would be great if there was a published side-by-side chart to clearly identify and list out the differences between a licensed therapist with financial training & a Finacial Planner with therapy training. Thank you for providing this education so the public is aware and understand the right question to ask before talking to any financial therapist.

Are there certain situations where you're more likely to save money? How does it feel? What are the emotional responses that you get when you swipe your card, when you add to your cart, or when you spend money? Do you feel different when you're earning money, spending money, saving money, or giving money? How do you feel about each of those four everyday interactions with money? Hi Lindsay, this is a fantastic video! Thanks for giving all these clear suggestions about how to manage your money in practical terms, beyond the basic tip of having a budget which doesn't get you very far when you actually need to build a game plan for managing your finances. I would add that depending on where you live, it's also worth checking annually if you're eligible for any financial aid (eg for child care, housing) and if you're employed, finding out if your employer offers any advantages like support for transport (car sharing, taking public transport or cycling to work) or investing. My husband and I come from very different backgrounds and it took us several years to get on the same page financially. I insisted we take note of our incomes and expenses for about two years to have a clear picture of how our money was flowing, we did that in an excel spreadsheet. That really helped us understand where we were and honestly makes the annual/quarterly updates SO much easier now. We live in France and also got some help from an accredited financial advisor who of course earned a commission for the products we subscribed through him, but we consider it was worth it because he recommended appropriate investment options for us that have been giving good results, whereas we would have probably been too scared of placing larger sums on actions or bonds by ourself. So as you said, it's worth educating yourself and considering getting professional advice to take action. We have a toddler and it's hard to find a quiet time to sit down and do our financial planning now, but your video has reminded me how important we check in regularly how we're doing, so thank you! ;)

I have dyscalculia/adhd. One of the big signs of dyscalculia is getting lost or having no sense of direction. I woukd joke about getting lost going around the block. It ialso translates into getting lost in life directions. Not having a spending plan blue print map, not knowing what account balances are, or a lack of clarity on incoming/out going. Same! Understanding the consequences of having both, that I am a compulsive spender and the WHY I spend, finally put me on a better path. I buy things to soothe, cajole and reward myself. I now that that with things that are free and not materialstic, plus I deal with the emotion, talk to my best friend, journal. I only have a prepay credit card and have savings accounts that make it very hard and expensive to withdraw money. I never go to the city to stroll, unless it's a vacation (and I have a set amout of money to spend), once a year (with like 300$ to spend on a pair of shoes and second hand clothing. It's an annual ritual with a bonus. paid for by admin money from work (which is not budgeted into my monthly budget). I save the money or spend it on nice groceries or social time with friends. I also like using a budget app and my city has a free budget advice office, run by a foundation. I stay off websites and apps that make me want to spend. If I want the dopamine hit of a pretty thing to buy, I look at Pinterest (but they have Ads now, which sucks!!!).

After some research, I kept hearing about the link between Adderall and impulse buying/behavior. Great video and analysis, thanks! Curious where one can get 6.25% on a 30 year mortgage now? I've been hearing the avg is around 7% even with excellent credit. Maybe 6.25% is for a 15 year loan?

Great question, and (drumroll) it depends! Shopping around for loan rates is a good idea-rates bounce around, and you're right: The interest rate ranges up to 7-7.5% (I filmed this about a month before I posted it, hence the differentiation in interest rates). Sometimes, a local credit union will have a better rate than a national bank, and sometimes, the opposite is true.
